The Anoba tribe are known as the “People of the Trees”. This is due to their habit of living much of their lives in the trees. They eat, socialize and sleep in tree houses and on open platforms in the high branches. They swing on vines between trees, gather fruit and hunt birds and small arboreal mammals, all without ever needing to set foot on the ground. They do occasionally come down to the forest floor to hunt and gather, but they spend a good three quarters of their lives in the trees.
The Anoba people are slender and light weight. Both genders average about 1.6 meters tall and rarely more than 45 kg. They have narrow waists, small breasts and are generally fine boned. All Anoba have light brown hair, brown eyes and tawny skin. They wear little clothing and adorn themselves only with natural things - leaves, flowers and twine. They perfume themselves with oil derived from the essence of flowers.
To say that the Anoba are “children of the forest” would be an understatement. Their island, Mejah, is entirely forest and the Anoba live their whole lives among the trees. They are intimately familiar with every tree, shrub, flower, grass and mushroom in their realm. They excel at rapid and silent movement through the forest – both on the ground and swinging through the branches. Their skills at herbalism and natural healing are unequaled. They have a poultice, tincture, herbal tea or medicinal potion to cure just about anything. Their diet consists mostly of fruits, nuts, vegetables, mushrooms, edible flowers, grubs and insects. They consume the flesh of animals only rarely and even then, limit their hunting to birds and small game.
The Anoba are one of the more peaceful tribes and generally do not attack the other tribes. However, they are frequently attacked by the Yamonari, the Kuloth and others and are forced to defend themselves. Their skills at herbalism allow the Anoba to concoct a variety of poisons which they use to coat arrow heads and spear tips. Their warriors wear a type of armor made from sheets of hardened bark and twine. They even have a primitive “gas grenade”, a hollowed out fruit husk filled with a strong liquid irritant that aerosolizes when the husk breaks open. If a battle goes badly for them, the Anoba will flee to the safety of the tree tops and swing away to other parts of the forest.
The Anoba do not like visitors to their island. While they may not attack foreigners outright, they will politely ask strangers to leave them in peace. Aggressive incursions (such as a permanent encampment or someone cutting down trees) will be ordered to leave, at spear point. They will drive invaders out forcefully, if need be. As a tribe, they wish only to be left alone.
The Anoba do not fish and do not take to the sea in long boats as most of the other tribes do. They rarely venture to the coast and tend to keep to the heavily forested interior of the island.
